From Formula 1 & Military Tech to making the BEST SHIFTER EVER… w/ Russell  ACUiTY Instruments

Ever wonder how some of these aftermarket companies in motorsports get their start? You’d think most of them start with an idea… maybe a potential opportunity to fill a niche gap in the market…

Here we are with Russell Garehan from  @ACUiTYinstruments  . In the case of Acuity, you could make the argument that the company is the culmination of an interesting and twisting journey that the founder, Russell, has endured to get here. Whether it’s his background working in Formula 1 for the likes of Ferrari or Williams, to his time working in Military Defense Technology. Russell has taken his engineering experience gained throughout his life and applied it to automotive in the form of Acuity Instruments.

Acuity specializes in developing high-performance aftermarket components designed to enhance the driving experience of Honda and Acura vehicles. Being founded by engineers with backgrounds in F1 and Le Mans Prototype 1 (LMP1), their product lineup includes precision-engineered gear shifters, throttle pedal spacers, shift linkage bushings, air intake systems, and wiring harnesses. These components are crafted to meet the rigorous demands of motorsport while offering the refinement desired by street enthusiasts. Acuity’s mission is to help drivers reconnect with their vehicles by improving performance and driving enjoyment.

In the podcast episode, we chat with Russell about Acuity’s beginnings, how the company came to be, and the new advancements in automotive tech that they’re bringing to the table currently. Truly a brilliant guy, our convo with Russell highlights the journey and insights that someone like him can bring to this industry – pushing us forward with critical thinking, problem solving, and testing… A LOT OF TESTING.

OEMs Bringing Back Iconic Names (RSX, PRELUDE, MR2) | Behind the Wheel Podcast

OEMs Bringing Back Iconic Names (RSX, PRELUDE, MR2)

Names like “Honda Prelude” and “Acura RSX” are starting to re-enter the market as OEMs continue their push of re-introducing old legendary names back to enthusiasts looking for a new car.

At first sight, you may see “2026 Acura RSX” and get excited at the thought of Acura re-introducing a classic name as a new, fun, sports car. But, remember what Mitsubishi did with the Eclipse when they re-introduced it as the Eclipse Cross? Get ready for heaps of disappointment, because the 2026 Acura RSX is NOT what you’re expecting. (Neither is the Honda Prelude).

So that got us talking about this trend, and the ramifications that come with it. For instance, as OEMs make this push and inevitable transition to EVs, what does that mean for the enthusiast? Is there any possibility to tune these EV powertrains or is modification basically out the window going forward?
