We want to congratulate Ali Arsham along with Gogogear.com for putting work in during the 2012 season. Those excellent times and exceptional driving has made the team eager for more. The 2013 season is not going to be an easy one but we know the team has the drive and determination to do what it takes. This article by Downshift Magazine is from the 2012 season opener where they just missed the podium by one spot! We are excited to see what the Hyundai Genesis Coupe is going to do at this years season opener, April 13th & 14th at Thunderhill Raceway in Sonoma California.
Did you checkout Dsport recently? Well if not you missed some cool Konig stuff in issues 123 (January) and 124 (Febrary)! In February they were tuning their Turbocharged Honda Fit which spun the rollers to 164whp/166wtq. The Fit which also had an excellent spread in the January issue, featuring the KONIG Wideopen in 15×8″ ET+20; is now taking this project a step further by completely revamping the car from the ground up. The 15×8 wheels are now not only helping in the handling department for this nimble machine but also in keeping the power down to the ground. These were a huge improvement over the Fit’s 15×6″ OEM sizing. Stay tuned for more updates!
Our good friend Ali Arsham at Gogogear.com who runs the number 33 Hyundai Genesis in NASA’s USTCC series brought both the Genesis and the USTCC Kia Optima pacecar featuring 18” Konig Backbone wheels to the San Francisco International Auto Show back in November. As you may have seen on here before the Genesis Coupe is running Konig Kilograms in 18″. The race cars received excellent feedback from the audience.
The showing gained interest from men and woman alike; that is, men and woman interested in race cars. The show was sponsored by the San Francisco Chronicle and AutoTrader.com. This gave some of the larger manufactures a chance to show off their latest and greatest. At the event there was a booth setup for “Ride and Drive” which hosted such manufactures as GM, Nissan and Scion. This allowed the spectators to sign up and drive the cars around under a normal setting. In the past Chevy had something similar; “Rev it Up” allowed the drivers to put the cars through 1000ft drag stretch, autocross course and other exciting transitions to get the car loose and leave you smiling the whole time. While this was not nearly as exciting, this was something that 99.999% of the people who were at the show were interested in. How does the car drive on the road everyday and is this the car for me? This gave the spectators the opportunity to drive the car around under supervision with a representative from each company. This allowed the potential buyers the ability to ask questions and get answers on the fly. Traction control remained on so clipping perfect apexes was unavailable during the 15 minute session. The spectators loved the Hyundai Genesis Coupe so much that they even posted a picture of it on the SF Auto Show website. http://www.sfautoshow.com/special-attractions/aftermarket-alley/
At the show they had a display set up that let spectators view the USTCC race cars and were given the opportunity to get information about USTCC series. Having the vehicles displayed sparked interest as to both the beautiful Konig wheels that were displayed on the race cars but also gained interested in the sport. People were grabbing the Konig information pamphlets faster than they could be replaced.

**This is the official recap written by and courtesy of the Mertzanis Racing team from Formula Drift Round 6: “After Dark” at Las Vegas Motor Speedway – August 24th – 25th**
Right after pulling off the trailer on Thursday night, we went into the private paid practice and started bumper banging on the k-rails, and scraping paint and decals off the rear bumper. With some sway bar tweaks, and a Kenda Tire pressure adjustment, the car felt unstoppable. A full day before qualifying, the car felt fantastic to Dennis Mertzanis and the whole Mertzanis Racing crew.
Friday practice, before qualifying Dennis went out chasing Kyle Mohan, who is one of the fastest drivers on the circuit. Dennis wanted to see how quick the car setup for the weekend was overall. These screen grabs were pulled from our GoPro camera that has a video you can see here.
Dennis explains, “Well, we went flying into the first outer clip together. What is normally a full throttle affair, Mohan went too close to the wall, and hard-braked, slowing down a lot. I was coming in hot and couldn’t slow down fast enough. We made contact and I hit the wall knocking the suspension out of alignment.”
The team worked quickly to get the car back in race trim. Only one KÖNIG Milligram wheel was damaged beyond repair, since it made high-speed contact with the rear bash bar on Kyle Mohan’s Mazda Rx-8. After his two runs, Dennis finished 19th for Kenda Tires, which lined him up against Ryan Tuerck in the Retaks S13. This was a rematch from Round 1 at Streets of Long Beach.
On Saturday, just before competition brought on rain and crazy wind as the drivers hit the track. Luckily, we had a rain setup for the car on standby, but it all dried up before Dennis got on the track for his Top 32 battle. Ryan Tuerck led the first battle in his S13.5 against our Chevrolet Performance Parts powered LS3 S13.4. Dennis held a somewhat conservative, but all around solid follow run behind Tuerck.
After the smoke settled, the judges gave the win over to Ryan Tuerck eliminating Dennis Mertzanis from this weekend’s competition. The team came together and really made huge developments with the S13. Dennis is planning on a huge month of testing in September to get ready for the final round at Irwindale Speedway coming up in October.
